Artist Bio
Davon McMillian (b. 1990, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania) is a multidisciplinary visual artist based in Los Angeles, California. His practice centers on painting, printmaking and drawing, using portraiture and figuration to examine how experience shapes perception and behavior. He received his BA in Studio Arts from California State University, Chico in 2020, following a year studying language and culture in Japan. Before transitioning fully into his practice, McMillian spent over a decade (2014–2024) working as a commercial designer in retail and fashion, an experience that sharpened his knowledge of visual systems.
ARTIST STATEMENT (c. 2025):
I approach identity as an archive rather than a fixed state. Something built through choices, and adaptations. In my work, figures and portraits function less as likenesses and more as composite records, shaped by repetition or interruption. Working between digital and traditional materials, I use symbolism and text in accordance with the human form to explore moments where seemingly simple actions reveal deeper fractures. I’m interested in the spaces before and after these moments, allowing the figure to act as a place to orient oneself in time rather than a representation of experiences.
